Do you ever have a song that brings you some distinctive emotions you can never forget? In this series of blog articles, I will share about the songs that when they play, I cannot help but let my soul flies to the flowing of melodies.
The first song is “When she loved me” written by Randy Newman for the movie “Toy Story 2”.
The first time I heard this song was not when I watched the movie. But I cannot remember exactly how I encountered it. The only thing that appears in my memory now is that I listened to it every time I got on the bus from my university to home.

Everything was beautiful
Every hour spent together
Lives within my heart…”
The melody was so sweet and nostalgic. The song starts with the sound of the piano gently hitting the chords. Each chord is strolling down like drops of rain on a summer afternoon. Just imagine listening to this song while sitting on the porch, looking at every raindrop falling down peacefully.
The song’s melody is like a fresh stream that refreshes your soul and cleanses it from any worries of a busy life. Or it is like a long piece of silk that is so smooth and so satisfying to touch. Every time the high note is hit, it is both so breathtaking and so luscious at the same time. And when they hit the 7th chords or the dim chords, it was like the strokes of contrasting colors added to the painting in a warm tone.
The song brings me back to the balcony of my house in my hometown when I was still in high school. There stood a young boy who was full of dreams and hopes about a sweet love that he would have in the days to come, under the pinkish-blue sky of a tranquil evening.

Just she and I together
Like it was meant to be.”
I listened to two renditions of the song. One was sung by Sarah McLachlan, and one was sung by Samantha Barks, a cover version of the original one. Though they performed the song with different techniques, the emotion aroused inside me was still the same. I feel tinges of feeling like the ripples on a peaceful lake.
